Digital
forensics is the
process of finding information that is held by
electronic devices such as smart phones,
cellphones, PDAs, computers, servers, digital cameras, and other devices which contain or can use digital media. Digital
media includes:
* thumb drives (flash drives/pen drives/USB drives) * media cards (those little cards like the one your camera probably uses) * computer hard drives and external drives * CDs/DVDs * gaming machines with digital storage ability * portable music devices with digital storage ability. Digital
forensics is a deep dive into what the
device did, when it did it, and what user did it.
Electronic
discovery, (e-Discovery), while similar to digital forensics, is not
the
same.
e-Discovery is the procedure used to search for artifacts across hundreds, or even hundreds of thousands of items within a given search criteria. e-Discovery is not a deep dive into what else is or was involved. Harper Jones Digital Forensic Examiners, LLC can do either, depending on your needs.
